Baby Led or Purée Weaning?

Tuesday 13 May 2014

Baby Led or Purée weaning is a question I have been contemplating a lot recently. Little Miss is ready for weaning now, how I am not quite sure. This mile stone seems to have crept around ever so quickly.  Another step towards more independence is yet another bittersweet moment.

Everyone has their own ways and reasons behind how they choose to wean their babies. For Little Miss we are going to do a mix of the two I think, (we will see how it goes). With our son we were very much baby led as it completely suited us and him. He used to eat EVERYTHING now not so much but according to my sources it all a 'phase'.

So anyway today was THE day for Little Miss's first taste. I opted for carrot first because I used the same first food with Little Mr too.  I steamed a few carrots and then blitzed them with my blending stick thingy and mixed in with some of her milk. As well as offering the purée I also gave her two carrot sticks (steamed to floppy perfection) too to pick up and self feed the 'baby led' way if you like. Today the carrot sticks we more popular than the purée.

Yummy we like carrot, plus it is great fun!

Mmmm...

Err maybe not so sure just yet.

I offered a couple of spoons of the purée too but most found it's way back out again. However cooled boiled water from a sippy cup was the big hit of the day.

How did you wean your babies? What were your babies favourite foods?

Please comment any links to weaning blog posts you may have, I would love to have a read.

  1. We started off with purée but did a mix. He hated carrot and still does now, unless it's hidden in a sauce! #binkylinky

  2. Baby led all the way. Weaning was fun all round, it was a sensory play experience and my son is a great eater even now! Winning all round! My mum wishes she'd done it with my younger brothers and sisters since watching Tyler.

  3. Hi, I'll be interested to see how your weaning story progresses. My baby isn't even born yet, but I like to research ahead of time! x #BinkyLinky

  5. Love the concentration on her wee face! We did Baby Led Weaning apart from the odd moment when it just didn't suit us - sloppy soup, or out at a restaurant, or when there were just too many older relatives about and ready to 'help'. And sometimes he's just kinda lazy and likes some help. It's a great journey, enjoy! #binkylinky

  6. I started out making my own purees, but they weren't much of a hit so ended up buying shop jars. I looked into babyled and really wanted to do it, but after trying a few times, opted to use purees instead. Thanks for linking up to the #binkylinky

  7. We did a mix of both here which worked well for us. I made all my own purees and froze them but also did steamed veg etc when he was younger and apple and cheese toast or baby pizza as he got older.

    1. That sounds exactly like we are doing here too. I like making a batch of my own food.

  8. We're at exactly the same stage as you and started out doing a mixture of purees and BLW. However A stated getting a really gurgly tummy during the night and I wondered if it was the big chunks of fine did that he was swallowing that he was funding it hard to suggest, so we've cut them out the past few days and it does seem to have helped, so now sticking to well mashed food for the time being. Exciting times though :-)

  9. We have done just mashed food today too as she was gagging on yesterday's food and making herself sick :( so we have gone backwards a bit but she can't manage complete BLW yet.
